Not sure where this is going but I knocked it together last night. Some synths, some more of that pitch-shifted tape delay, some guitar. It seems, dunno, cheesier than most of the stuff so far but it's got a certain something to it.

Title was nicked from a Doctor Who episode but I've just this second realised that was "Girl In The Fireplace". Ah well. It stays.

I should be in bed getting much needed beauty sleep, not making Middle Eastern sounding Nintendo soundtracks.

Oli wants to have a word with me about my use of minor 2nds in the Cassette remix I'm doing.  Or possibly in the laptop solo I do live. Or something. I like minor 2nds though. Tough titties, Oli!

As such, it's his fault I'm up at 1am doing this nonsense to ensure I get my fix in:

It's just a drum loop (obshee) and an improvised monophonic keyboard take fed into three separate soft synths (with different pitch bend settings) via a bunch of Ableton's MIDI effects (arps, pitch, velocity, note length filters) which are then sent in varying amounts through two Augustus Loop tape delay simulators on the return tracks.

It was only meant to be 45 seconds of demo but it's rather more fun to play than to listen to so you get three minutes. Deal with it. I like it.

For those of you who may have thought my performance at the Spice Of Life was so shameful I'd given up music....sorry to disappoint! The real world has just been rather non co-operative of late when it's come to posting. As it goes, it was ok for a first go but that whole singing and playing at the same time is, you know, proper tricky.

Anyway, here's a demo:

Flash Flood [demo 001] [MP3]

Flash Flood is one of the tunes I did at the open mic night, mainly cos it only has D and Am chords in it and is therefore difficult to stuff up. This recording one take of guitar, one take of vocals and a drum loop. Every other sound you here is processed in real time from the guitar or the vocals. This means it took about 10 minutes to do the recording and three hours of effect programming but I think the overall effect is nice. Also....well, in theory it can be done live this way. One person with guitar and laptop.

It's the future, I tell you. :-)
